Unknown and Young Adult Cases:Indicators of Risk

It is important to keep in mind that it is impossible to eliminate all risk. We try to identify and manage risks that exist and reduce the likelihood of harm occurring. The mere age and developmental stage of youth and young adults presents both vast opportunity and increased risk, and makes it much more difficult for parents to enforce safety strategies.

Behaviours and traits that increase risk/vulnerability include:

  • Seeking increased independence
  • Relocating/new surroundings
  • Impulsiveness
  • Drug and/or alcohol use
  • Need for peer acceptance
  • Reduced inhibitions
  • Thrill seeking behaviour
  • Gullibility or inexperience

Many teens and young adults view themselves as invincible and often underestimate the possible dangers associated with certain situations. This is particularly true with alcohol and/or drug use, which can impair judgment. Impaired judgment may lead to wandering off or separating from a group (increasing their risk of becoming lost), being less aware of their surroundings (e.g., lakes, rivers), and encountering dangerous situations (e.g., physical harm).
